The Fourth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance, by a unanimous vote of 8 to 0 with 2 members absent, recommends Judge Larry E. Schwartz BE RETAINED.


Judge Schwartz was appointed to the Fourth Judicial District Court bench in January 1997. Prior to his appointment to the District Court bench, Judge Schwartz served as Deputy District Attorney. Judge Schwartz received his undergraduate degree and law degree from the University of Colorado. His workload consists of civil and criminal cases.


Judge Schwartz serves on committees and functions at the courthouse. He also assists with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) activities.


The Commission considered 134 written evaluations of Judge Schwartz from attorneys and non-attorneys. The Commission also considered a written self-evaluation completed by Judge Schwartz, performed a courtroom observation and conducted a personal interview with Judge Schwartz.


Judge Schwartz received high ratings from both attorneys and non-attorneys in every category, especially in the areas of maintaining appropriate control over proceedings; giving proceedings a sense of dignity; making sure all participants understand the proceedings; speaking clearly and making decisions without fear of being appealed. Of the attorneys, 83% recommended Judge Schwartz be retained in office, 14% somewhat recommend retain, 3% recommend not retain and 0% recommended he not be retained in office. Of non-attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 93% recommended retention and 2% recommended non-retention.
