Judge West was admitted to the bar in 1957 after receiving his law degree from the University of Colorado. Prior to his appointment as Weld County District Court Judge in October, 1987, he practiced law in Greeley as a private practitioner from 1958 to 1987. West also served as the city attorney for a number of municipalities in Weld County and as a municipal judge for the city of Greeley from 1959 to 1965.

West is a member of the Weld County, Colorado and American bar associations and a former member of the American Arbitration Association. He has been active in a number of civic and charitable organizations.

He currently hears only criminal cases. His prior assignments included criminal and domestic relations cases as well as some civil matters.

The majority of all of the surveyed groups highly recommended retention for West. Respondents to the survey commented West is competent and fair minded and that as his experience has increased he has become more efficient and able. Several respondents did indicate a concern with his inability to come to a decision.
