Judge Sternberg received his undergraduate degree in economics from Northwestern University in 1948. He received his law degree from the University of Colorado in 1950 and was admitted to the bar of Colorado in 1951. Before attending college, Judge Sternberg served in the United States Army for two years during World War II. Judge Sternberg was in the private practice of law in Denver and Littleton from 1951 through 1974. He was the City Attorney for the City of Littleton and counsel for the Littleton Urban Renewal Authority. Judge Sternberg served five and one-half years on the Colorado Supreme Court Grievance Committee. Judge Sternberg was appointed to the Colorado Court of Appeals in July 1974. He was appointed to the position of Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals on July 1, 1990. As the Chief Judge, Judge Sternberg is responsible for the administration and functioning of the Colorado Court of Appeals. Under his direction, the time in which most opinions issued by the Court of Appeals has been reduced to forty-five days following oral argument.
In addition to his administrative duties as Chief Judge, Judge Sternberg continues to take responsibility for fifty to seventy-five percent of a full caseload. Judge Sternberg received overall high evaluations from attorneys in the area of fairness, equal treatment of attorneys and litigants and judicial demeanor.
The State Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Alan L. Sternberg BE RETAINED.
