Judge Smith was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1966. He was employed in private practice as government counsel and as a court referee before his appointment as a judge. He was appointed a county court judge in 1984 and a district court judge in 1987. Smith is assigned to the 18th Judicial District at the Arapahoe Justice Center, where he handles domestic relations matters.
The written comments from the surveys were generally favorable, characterizing him as being an excellent judge, although law enforcement officers though he managed his docket ineffectively and was not punctual. The judicial performance commission was concluded, from his interview, that Smith was experienced, caring and excellent judicial temperament.
