Judge Schultz received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1967. After admission to the Colorado Bar that same year, he practiced law in the Denver City Attorney’s office until 1971. He moved to Fort Collins in 1971 and practiced with the Larimer County District Attorney’s office until 1974, when he was appointed County Court Judge for Larimer County. Judge Schultz served as the presiding Judge of the Larimer County Court from 1984 to 1990.

The cases handled by Judge Schultz include traffic cases, misdemeanors, felony bondings, civil cases with a jurisdiction up to $10,000 and an increasing number of domestic violence cases. Approximately 6,000 cases were dealt with by Judge Schultz last year.

In response to the questionnaires, results showed: 80 Attorneys, Retain 69% (55), Not retain 16% (13), No opinion 15% (12); 73 Litigants, Retain 56% (41), Not retain 4% (3), No opinion 40% (29); 31 Court Personnel, Retain 84% (26), Not retain 0% (0), No opinion 16% (5); 47 Law Enforcement, Retain 60% (28), Not retain 6% (3), No opinion 34% (16); 17 Jurors, Retain 94% (16), Not retain 0% (0), No opinion 6% (1).

The respondents generally rated Judge Schultz as a capable judge in criminal matters, but there was some criticism of his knowledge of civil law. Those responding  to the survey almost uniformly found Judge Schultz to be courteous, honest and fair as a judge.

The 8th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Ronald L. Schultz be retained.
