The Twenty-Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Todd Jay Plewe BE RETAINED.
Background: Judge Plewe was appointed to the Montezuma County Court on October 1, 2002. Judge Plewe received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and his law degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1997. Before his appointment to the court, he worked as a private attorney specializing in civil practice. He practiced law in Alamosa for two years. After his appointment to the County Court bench, he was subsequently appointed as a magistrate to the Montezuma County District Court. He was instrumental in establishing a DUI Court in Montezuma County and is presently actively involved in forming a fast track Domestic Violence Court. Judge Plewe is involved in his community as a mentor and coach of youth sports. He also participates as a congregational leader in his church and serves as a guest speaker for various community groups.
Strengths: Attorneys who responded to survey questions rated Judge Plewe well above average on his promptness in making rulings during trials, overall application and knowledge of the law. Attorneys commented that Judge Plewe is intelligent, professional and treats every defendant with dignity and respect.
The Commission reviewed various opinions that Judge Plewe wrote and conducted a personal interview. His opinions and decisions tended to be written with clarity and follow statutory law and case precedents. Judge Plewe is working to improve his mediation skills through his involvement as a member of the state Office of Dispute Resolution.
Recommendation: The majority of those surveyed strongly recommended that Judge Plewe be retained in office
