Judge Jackson L. Peters Jr. was appointed by Governor Roy Romer on August 20, 1989. He handles a widely varied caseload including divorces, traffic offenses, felony and misdemeanors litigation, and other types of disputes. He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1973 and worked for two years as a reporter for the Montrose Daily Press.
After receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Georgia Law School in 1978, Judge Peters returned to Colorado and served as staff attorney to Colorado Rural Legal Services in Alamosa for two years and Pike’s Peak Legal Services for nine years.
Since his appointment, he has been given high ratings from nearly all the respondents. Among those polled, including trial attorneys, litigants, jurors, courthouse personnel, and law enforcement personnel, 91.2% stated he performed his duties in a most efficient manner. The trial attorneys gave his a jury perfect rating, with only 6.7% of those who returned questionnaires said he could do a “better job” of sentencing and “clarifying” his written and oral opinions.
While there were a few negative opinions all agreed Judge Peters is fair and controls his docket efficiently. He is courteous to everyone and when necessary takes time to provide procedural explanations.
The 4th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Jackson L. Peters Jr. be retained.
