The Seventh Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance, by unanimous vote, recommends Chief Judge J. Steven Patrick BE RETAINED.

Judge Patrick graduated from Yale law school. He spent twelve years in private practice, then two years as a Gunnison County Court judge before being appointed to the District Court bench in 1991. He serves on numerous committees of the state judicial branch, chairs the Probation Advisory Committee, serves on the Executive Oversight Committee for the Department of Health and Human Services, and is an officer in both the Trial Judges Council and District Judges Association. Judge Patrick, aside from his work on the bench, enjoys running and participates in community activities. Judge Patrick’s workload consists of thirty-five percent (35%) civil and sixty-five (65%) criminal.

The Commission observed Judge Patrick in the courtroom, reviewed his decisions, conducted a personal interview and reviewed his written self-evaluation. The Commission found Judge Patrick to be dignified and courteous in the courtroom. Judge Patrick manages his docket in an efficient manner, makes rulings based on the merits of the case at hand and applies the law fairly and consistently.

Eighty-eight percent (88%) of attorneys responding to the evaluation survey recommended that Judge Patrick be retained in office and twelve percent (12%) recommended that he not be retained. Of the non-attorneys, eighty-six percent (86%) recommended retention, seven percent (7%) recommended non-retention, and seven percent (7%) had no opinion.
