Colorado Court of Appeals
Honorable Karen S. Metzger
Retention Year: 1994
Recommendation: Retain
Judge Metzger was admitted to the Bar of Colorado in 1970. She served as a public defender and was engaged in the private practice of law in Denver before she was appointed to the Denver County Court in 1977. After serving as a county judge for two years, Judge Metzger was appointed to the Denver District Court in 1979. She was appointed to the Colorado Court of Appeals on July 15, 1983.
Judge Metzger has been deeply involved in continuing legal, judicial and public education, as well as civic and charitable activities. She is a member of the Colorado Supreme Court’s Judicial Advisory Committee and a member of the Family Law Subcommittee of the Judicial Advisory Committee. She is a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and was the author and editor of the Judge’s Manual for the Colorado Court of Appeals. She is a member of the budget committee for Regis Jesuit High School, a member of the Catholic-Jewish dialogue and participates in the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Badge coach.
Judge Metzger has produced the highest number of opinions authored by a judge of the Court of Appeals for each of the last two years. She is seen by the commission and trial judges as a very able and talented jurist. Her participation as a member of the Colorado Supreme Court’s committee on public education and her willingness to speak about the law to a wide range of civic and business organizations are highly commendable.
The State Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Karen S. Metzger BE RETAINED.
