Judge McLachlan was appointed Prowers County judge in February 1988. He was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1953.
He served as a partner in the law firm of Ham, Johnson and McLachlan from 1953 to 1957, as district judge for the 15th Judicial District from 1957 to 1965, and as a partner in the law firm of Johnson & McLachlan from 1965 to present.
The Prowers County judgeship is a part-time position, permitting McLachlan to also practice law. The jurisdiction of the court includes traffic, misdemeanor, appeals form municipal court, small claims and civil matters.
The attorneys general gave the judge high ratings on all questions. Some members of the law enforcement community expressed a concern the judge is not free from favoritism. The majority of those polled rated him favorably on this question.
