Judge Martinez graduated from the University of Denver in 1974 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He received his law degree from the University of Colorado in 1977. He was a Colorado State Public Defender from 1979 until 1989. He was appointed as district court judge in November 1989.

Judge Martinez received overall high marks from groups surveyed. Jurors and litigants gave Judge Martinez very high marks. Trial lawyers gave the Judge good to excellent marks in most cases. Jurors and litigants voted 100% to retain. Attorneys voted 87.2% to retain, 8.5% no opinion and 4.3% not to retain.

A few of the comments were as follows: several commented they though the Judge was very reasonable, fair and competent. Most felt he was very strong in criminal cases and not as strong in civil cases, however, in regard to civil cases most felt he was getting stronger.  There were some feelings that both his oral and written decisions could be clearer. A few felt he could show more understanding and compassion. Also there were a few comments he could be more punctual in commencing proceedings.

The 4th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Gilbert A. Martinez be retained.
