The Seventh Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance voted 9-0 (one member absent) to recommend that Judge Alvin K. Lutz BE RETAINED.

Judge Lutz was appointed to the Hinsdale County Court on January 1, 2006.  Judge Lutz received an Undergraduate Degree from the University of Colorado in 1970 and his Graduate Degree from the University Of Colorado Graduate School of Banking in the 1980s. He served in the US Military in Vietnam.  Just prior to his appointment to the County Court, Judge Lutz was the Director of Corporate Security for Norwest Banking Corporation (n/k/a) Wells Fargo.  Judge Lutz is very active in community service through public service projects. He demonstrates a commitment to legal research, and continues to further his legal education through a variety of professional development activities.

The Commission conducted a personal interview with Judge Lutz, reviewed opinions he authored, observed him in the Court, reviewed comments received from interested parties during the evaluation, and reviewed survey responses from attorneys and non-attorneys who had experience with Judge Lutz.  Among the survey questions was, “How strongly do you recommend Judge Lutz be retained in office, or not be retained in office?”  Of attorneys completing the survey, 100% recommended to retain. Of non-attorneys completing the survey, 100% recommended to retain.

Judge Lutz has presided over criminal and civil matters in this term.  Based on the survey results of attorneys and non-attorneys he received an overall score of 3.8 out of total of 4.0. Attorneys and non-attorneys responding to the surveys rated Judge Lutz’s overall performance above a 3.7 out of a total of 4.0 across all categories (case management, application and knowledge of the law, diligence, communication, and demeanor). No deficiencies were noted. As a non-lawyer, Judge Lutz shows a strong willingness to prepare himself for each case including researching areas of the law applicable to the case. Judge Lutz is very cognizant of the requirements of the often complex job of being a County Judge in a very small community.
