The Twenty-First Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Gretchen B. Larson BE RETAINED.
Judge Larson was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in French. Judge Larson attended law school at the University of Colorado, graduating in 1993. She began working as a prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office in November 1993 in Grand Junction. Judge Larson also worked as a prosecutor in Garfield County before returning to the District Attorney’s Office in Grand Junction where she remained until she was appointed as a County Court Judge in July, 2006.
Judge Larson is married and has two children. In what little free time she has, Judge Larson enjoys church-related volunteer work.
The Judicial Performance Commission reviewed written evaluations from attorneys and non-attorneys, observed her in the courtroom, reviewed samples of written opinions she authored, reviewed her own self-evaluation and conducted an interview with her. While Judge Larson is more critical of herself, attorney and non-attorney evaluations rated her above average in all categories.
Attorneys rated her above average in the areas of application and knowledge of the law, diligence, and her ability to identify and analyze relevant facts, and 89 percent recommended she be retained. Non-attorney’s rated her performance slightly lower than other county court judges statewide; however an above-average 94 percent recommended her retention.
