The Twenty-First Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends by a vote of 10-0 that Judge Craig Peter Henderson BE RETAINED.

Judge Henderson is from Wiley, Colorado. He graduated from McPherson College and Washburn University Law School. Judge Henderson clerked for the Governor of Kansas during law school, worked in a private practice, and worked in the Office of the District Attorney for the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Twenty-First Judicial Districts. Judge Henderson was appointed as a Mesa County Court Judge by Governor Owens in 2006.

The Commission was impressed with Judge Henderson. His evaluations were above the statewide average and even comments regarding his weaknesses were not significant. He was generally considered to be fair, thorough in his analysis, patient, kind, respectful, and communicated well with everyone in his courtroom. He demonstrates exemplary performance in his community service. He holds the reputation of a teaching judge and considers it his duty to ensure that all litigants receive a fair day in court. The Commission believes that Judge Henderson is an excellent judge and a credit to the bench.

Judge Henderson was evaluated by the following methods: attorney surveys, non-attorney surveys, self-evaluation, courtroom observations, review of written decisions, and an interview with the Commission. Attorneys and non-attorneys graded Judge Henderson above the average of all county judges standing for retention statewide. Of all attorneys surveyed about retention, 88% recommended to retain, 9% not to retain, and 3% were undecided or didn’t have enough information to make a recommendation. Of those expressing an opinion to retain or not to retain, 92% recommended to retain and 9% not to retain. Of all non-attorneys surveyed, 87% recommended to retain, 7% not to retain, and 6% were undecided or didn’t have enough information to make a recommendation. Of those expressing an opinion to retain or not to retain, 93% recommended to retain and 7% not to retain. (These percentages may not total 100% due to rounding.)
