The Sixteenth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Suzanne A. Grant BE RETAINED.
Background: Judge Grant has been a part-time County Judge since 2007. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming. Prior to her appointment as a judge, Judge Grant was experienced as an educator, an administrator and as a quasi-judicial officer. Judge Grant is a part-time lay judge serving in a rural county.
Strengths: Despite serving as a lay judge without the benefit of law school training, Judge Grant has overcome that obstacle by demonstrating a strong willingness to learn and to apply legal principles. Given time, she has demonstrated an excellent ability to research and develop legal issues to support her rulings. Attorneys commented that Judge Grant has provided well-reasoned rulings and demonstrated strong communications skills with participants. Non-attorneys favorably remarked about her fairness and positive judicial demeanor. Judge Grant conducts her proceedings in a dignified manner and treats all participants with respect.
Weaknesses: Judge Grant is working to improve her case load management and to broaden her understanding of substantive and procedure law.
Recommendation: Of all attorneys surveyed about retention, 71% recommended to retain, 29% not to retain, and 0% expressed no opinion. Of all non-attorneys surveyed, 62% recommended to retain, 27% not to retain, and 11% expressed no opinion. Excluding those who had no opinion, 70% recommended retention and 29% not to retain.
