The Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Clarisse M. Gonzales BE RETAINED.

Judge Gonzales graduated with a degree in Visual Arts from the University of Northern Colorado in 1987, later graduating from Howard University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in 1992. She is admitted to both the Colorado and Ohio Bars, and before becoming a judge, worked as a prosecutor, Alternate Defense Counsel, private criminal defense attorney and Guardian Ad Litem in Dependency/Neglect cases. She was appointed as a District Court Magistrate in the Eighteenth Judicial District in 2005 before being appointed to the Denver County Court in January 2007.

The Commission reviewed the results of surveys of lawyers and non-lawyers who were familiar with Judge Gonzales’ work, interviewed the Judge, and reviewed four of her written orders. Her self-evaluation was thorough and insightful. In addition, selected members of the Commission observed Judge Gonzales in court.

The results of the surveys of lawyers and non-lawyers showed that Judge Gonzales has rated high in most areas; her ratings were higher in all areas than the averages for all county court judges. Her strong ratings in the areas of case management, application, and knowledge of the law, demeanor, and diligence are a testament to her judicial abilities.
Judge Gonzales received very strong support from both lawyers and non-lawyers. Of all attorney surveyed about retention, 94% recommended to retain, 3% not to retain and 3% expressed no opinion. Excluding those who had no opinion, 97% recommended to retain and 3% not to retain. Of all non-attorneys surveyed, 90% recommended to retain, 6% not to retain and 4% expressed no opinion. Excluding those who had no opinion 94% recommended to retain and 6% not to retain.
