Fourth Judicial District - District Court Judge

Honorable David A. Gilbert

Retention Year: 2004
Recommendation: Retain

The Fourth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance, by a vote of nine to zero, recommends that Judge David A. Gilbert BE RETAINED.

Judge Gilbert was appointed to the Colorado District Court bench in July 2001. Prior to being appointed, Judge Gilbert served in various capacities within the District Attorney's office for fifteen years, the last position being the Chief Deputy District Attorney. Judge Gilbert graduated from Queens College in New York City in 1980 and completed his law degree from the University of Denver Law School in 1984.

The Commission reviewed written evaluations of Judge Gilbert from attorneys and non-attorneys, as well as written verbatim comments attached to the questionnaires. Judge Gilbert also submitted a self-evaluation that was reviewed by the Commission members in addition to an interview.

Judge Gilbert received high ratings from attorneys responding to the survey with 80% strongly recommending approval and 2% strongly recommending not retaining. In the non-attorney category that responded to the questionnaire, 88% strongly recommended retention and 5% recommended he not be retained, while 7% were undecided.

Judge Gilbert believes being a judge gives him an opportunity to learn something new everyday and works hard to make every court appearance meaningful to the parties involved. He enjoys speaking to school and community groups about the law and the court system. He devotes many hours to his congregation as a volunteer and believes that judges play an important role in the community.
