The Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Martin F. Egelhoff BE RETAINED.

Background: Judge Egelhoff was appointed to the Denver District Court bench in July 1999. Prior to his appointment on the bench, Judge Egelhoff was a Chief Deputy Denver District Attorney. Judge Egelhoff graduated from Colorado State University in 1981 and received his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1984. Over the past two years, Judge Egelhoff has presided over criminal cases. Judge Egelhoff is also on the Adjunct Faculty at the University of Denver School of Law.

The Commission reviewed written evaluations of Judge Egelhoff from attorneys and non-attorneys, including written verbatim comments attached to the evaluation questionnaires. The Commission also considered a written self-evaluation completed by Judge Egelhoff and conducted a personal interview with Judge Egelhoff.

Strengths: Judge Egelhoff’s judicial philosophy centers on fairly and promptly adjudicating individual disputes that come before him in a fair-handed and respectful manner, consistent with the rule of law. Judge Egelhoff received above-average ratings from both attorneys and non-attorneys in virtually every category, particularly in the areas of overall diligence, overall fairness, treating without bias, prompt rulings and overall application of the law.

Weaknesses: Judge Egelhoff received below-average ratings from attorneys with respect to his judicial demeanor.

Recommendation: Among the attorneys surveyed, 91% recommend that Judge Egelhoff be retained. Among the non-attorneys surveyed, 97% recommend that Judge Egelhoff be retained.
