The Fourth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends by a unanimous vote that Judge Jann P. DuBois BE RETAINED.
Background: Judge DuBois graduated from Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado in 1978. She went on to attend Colorado College in Colorado Springs, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction, majoring in history, in 1982. She then attended The University of Colorado School of Law, where she received her law degree in 1986. Prior to her appointment as a District Court judge in 2005, she served as a Magistrate in the Fourth Judicial District for nine years, hearing family law cases. Previously, she was head attorney for the Child Support Enforcement Unit and chief deputy district attorney for Child Support Enforcement. Judge DuBois has been very involved in family and parenting activities outside the courtroom, including service for 12 years as the co-chair of the Children and Families in Transition Committee in the Fourth Judicial District. She also serves as the Judicial Liaison for the Association of Multidisciplinary Professionals Serving Families (MDP). Judge DuBois currently hears criminal and family law cases.
Strengths: Judge DuBois was rated well above the average of all judges in every area the attorney survey rated, including a number of perfect scores. Similarly, she was highly rated by non-attorneys in all aspects of her work. Attorneys regularly noted her excellent command of the complex aspects of family law and her use of “common sense” in her courtroom.
Weaknesses: Judge DuBois realizes that she needs to increase her knowledge of criminal law. Some attorneys noted her extremely busy docket as a weakness.
Recommendation: In making its recommendation, the Commission considered the results of surveys from 29 attorneys and 41 non-attorneys, Judge DuBois’ own self evaluation, submitted written opinions and courtroom observations by Commission members, along with the judicial interview conducted by the Commission. Judge DuBois was recommended for retention by 100% of the attorneys, including a 97% “strongly retain” rating, and 86% of the non-attorneys.
