The Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Robert B. Crew Jr. BE RETAINED.
Background: Judge Crew was appointed to the Denver County Court bench in September 1977. Prior to his appointment, Judge Crew was in private practice in Denver, specializing in corporate law. He also served as a part-time county court magistrate. Judge Crew received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1968 and also attended the University of Michigan Law School. Judge Crew is presently assigned to protection order court. During his thirty years on the bench, he has served in all divisions of the County Court, including traffic court arraignments, advisements and General Sessions trials for municipal ordinance violations, criminal court, environmental court, preliminary hearings, and protective orders court.
The Commission reviewed written evaluations of Judge Crew from attorneys and non-attorneys, including written verbatim comments attached to the evaluation questionnaires. The Commission also considered a written self-evaluation completed by Judge Crew, reviewed written opinions by Judge Crew and conducted a personal interview with him.
Strengths: Judge Crew is a believer in victims' rights, including the payment of damages by the persons who are responsible. Judge Crew conducts himself in a dignified and professional manner. He believes in the importance of maintaining the honesty, integrity and respectability of the Judicial Branch of government. He is conscientious about controlling his docket. Judge Crew believes that it is important for judges to be involved in the community. He often talks with the students who visit the courts and participates in welcoming the citizens who appear for jury duty.
Recommendation: Judge Crew had consistently better than average ratings from the large number of attorneys and non-attorneys responding to the survey. Many commented that he is a fair judge. Of the attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 97% recommended that Judge Crew be retained. Of the non-attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 99% recommended that he be retained.
