The Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Robert B. Crew, Jr. BE RETAINED.
Judge Crew was appointed to the Denver County Court bench in September 1977. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Crew was in private practice in Denver, specializing in corporate law. He also served as a part-time County Court Magistrate. Judge Crew received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1968. Judge Crew presently hears civil cases. During his twenty-two years on the bench, he has also served in almost all divisions of the County Court, including traffic court; arraignments, advisements and General Sessions trials for municipal ordinance violations; criminal court; environmental court; preliminary hearings; and protective orders court.
The Commission reviewed written evaluations of Judge Crew from attorneys and non-attorneys, including written verbatim comments attached to the evaluation questionnaires. The Commission also considered a written self-evaluation completed by Judge Crew and conducted a personal interview with Judge Crew.
Judge Crew is a strong believer in victims' rights, including the payment of damages by the persons who are responsible. Judge Crew always conducts himself in a dignified and professional manner because he believes in the importance of maintaining the honesty, integrity and respectability of the Judicial Branch of government. He enjoys his public service job as a judge. He is very conscientious about controlling his docket and attending to the many pending cases. Judge Crew believes that it is important for judges to be involved in the community. He often talks with the students who visit the courts and always participates in welcoming the citizens who appear for jury duty. For recreation, Judge Crew enjoys skiing and working in his yard.
Judge Crew received high ratings from both attorneys and non-attorneys in virtually every category, particularly in the areas of being courteous; treating all parties equally; communicating clearly, thoroughly and in a well-reasoned manner; maintaining proper judicial temperament; correctly applying the law; and performing with diligence, efficiency and minimal delay. Of the attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 91% recommended that Judge Crew be retained in office, 5% recommended that he not be retained, and 5% had no opinion. Of the non-attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 76% recommended retention, 16% recommended non-retention, and 9% had no opinion.
