Thirteenth Judicial District - Sedgwick County Court Judge
Honorable Max E. Carlson
Retention Year: 2000
Recommendation: Retain
The Thirteenth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends Judge Max E. Carlson BE RETAINED.
Judge Carlson was appointed to the Sedgwick County Court bench in August 1978. Judge Carlson presently hears traffic, traffic infraction, misdemeanor, and civil cases as part-time judge. He also has a private practice of law in Julesburg. He has represented the municipalities of Julesburg, Ovid, Sedgwick, and the County of Sedgwick.
Questionnaires for evaluation of Judge Carlson were sent to all attorneys who have practiced in his court the past two years and non-attorneys (law enforcement, jurors, litigants, court/probation employees and crime victims) who have appeared in his court. Those surveys returned rated Judge Carlson very highly.
Judge Carlson consistently rated higher than evaluation ratings of all county judges on a statewide basis. Of the attorneys surveyed 100% voted in favor of retention. Of the non-attorneys surveyed, 78% voted in favor of retention, 7% voted in favor of non-retention, and 16% had no opinion. The vote of the eight member Commission was unanimous to retain Judge Carlson.
