Bohning, Larry 1998 Evaluation

Second Judicial District - Denver County Court Judge

Honorable Larry L. Bohning

Retention Year: 1998
Recommendation: Retain

The Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Larry L. Bohning BE RETAINED.

Judge Bohning graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a major in English and psychology, and graduated from the University of South Dakota College of Law in 1968. After working as a staff attorney for the South Dakota legislature and later as an assistant city attorney for the City and County of Denver, Judge Bohning was appointed to the county court bench in 1980. He served as the presiding county court judge from 1993 through 1995.

Judge Bohning is currently assigned to the criminal division and has served in all of the county court divisions, including traffic, criminal arraignment, and civil. Judge Bohning promotes the expanded use of technology to benefit the public and the court. He has helped develop and implement an Internet home page for the Denver county court. The Denver county court has a very high volume of cases, and Judge Bohning has assisted in promoting increased efficiency while not sacrificing an appreciation of the human factors in cases before him.

Based on personal observation of Judge Bohning's performance on the bench, survey results, a personal interview, and other materials submitted to the Commission, the Commission finds that Judge Bohning is a highly rated judge.

Attorney survey results indicate that 92.5% of attorneys voted to retain Judge Bohning and 7.5% voted not to retain. Court staff voted 91.7% to retain, 4.2% not to retain, and 4.1% had no opinion. Jurors voted 87% to retain and 13% had no opinion. Law enforcement personnel voted 81.3% to retain and 18.7% not to retain.
