The First Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Jack W. Berryhill BE RETAINED.

Judge Berryhill was appointed to the First Judicial District Court bench in January 2000. Prior to his appointment, Judge Berryhill practiced law in the Denver metro area, specializing in civil litigation. In the First Judicial District Court Judge Berryhill hears civil, domestic and criminal cases.

The Commission was impressed by the judge’s willingness to become more proficient in the area of criminal law and by the development of his skills as a judge in the two years he has been on the bench. The Commission reviewed written evaluations of Judge Berryhill from attorneys and non-attorneys, including written verbatim comments attached to the evaluation questionnaires. The Commission also considered a written self-evaluation completed by Judge Berryhill and conducted a personal interview with the judge.

Judge Berryhill believes it is vital for judges to be visible outside of their courtrooms. His community service covers a wide spectrum of activities. He is on the board of directors of the Central City Opera House; he has served on the Membership Council of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce; served on the committee of the First Judicial District Bar Association to improve judge-lawyer relations; teaches a one-day seminar for the International Practicum called "The Law and Folklore of Depositions" (this December will be his 20th year); serves on a board in his church; and speaks to many service clubs and local high school classes when possible.

Attorneys surveyed recommended by 80% that Judge Berryhill be retained in office, 15% recommended that he not be retained and 5% had no opinion. Non-attorneys surveyed recommended by 92% that Judge Berryhill be retained in office, 5% recommended that he not be retained and 3% had no opinion.
