Anderson, Leland 2000 Evaluation

First Judicial District - District Court Judge

Honorable Leland P. Anderson

Retention Year: 2000
Recommendation: Retain

The First Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Leland P. Anderson BE RETAINED.

Judge Anderson was appointed to the bench in 1997. Previously he was in private practice and was a Deputy District Attorney.

The Commission noted that Judge Anderson has received many honors and awards. He is very active in the community and in professional associations.

Of the attorneys surveyed, 69% favored retention, 27% favored non-retention and 4% had no opinion. Of the non-attorneys surveyed, 76% favored retention, 12% favored non-retention and 12% had no opinion.

In accordance with procedures Judge Anderson submitted a well-written, lengthy, thoughtful self-evaluation, which expressed a soul-searching attitude, recognition that he is a provisional judge and is still acquiring the necessary experience. The Commission learned from his interview that he is an exceptionally intelligent person, has steady mannerisms, and understands that he is not perfect, attempts to improve and attempts to rule in a manner similar to the other judges.

The surveys indicated that there were problems with his timeliness. The Commission is satisfied that he has taken the appropriate steps to improve in this area and will continue to do so.
