Judge Althoff was admitted to the bar in 1956 after graduation from law school at the University of Minnesota. He was engaged in private practice in Greeley from 1956 to 1978, when he was appointed to the Weld County District Court. Judge Althoff has served as a district court judge since his appointment.

Judge Althoff presently hears criminal cases, domestic relations cases, and civil matters involving more than $10,000.

Of all the surveyed groups, 44.44% recommended retention for Judge Althoff, with 38.46% not recommending retention, and 17.09% expressing no opinion. A number of respondents stated Judge Althoff is a good judge, however, a large number of respondents disagreed. A number of responses in the survey indicated Judge Althoff works diligently, is punctual, and makes prompt rulings and decisions. More than half of the respondents thought Judge Althoff did not render clear oral decisions and did not have an appropriate judicial demeanor.
 
The 19th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge John J. Althoff Not be Retained.
