The Fourth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance by a unanimous vote of 8 to 0 with 2 members absent, recommends Judge James S. Patterson BE RETAINED.
Judge Patterson has been a judge for 14 years. He was appointed in October, 1991. Before taking a position on the bench, Judge Patterson was a deputy District Attorney, had a private practice and was a Colorado Springs Municipal Judge. He specializes in criminal law. At this time, Judge Patterson’s assigned workload consists of civil, traffic and misdemeanor cases.
Judge Patterson thinks community service is important. He is a member of an Elks Lodge, he volunteers with Teen Court and is a speaker at schools explaining the judicial system.
The Commission considered Judge Patterson performance through 144 surveys from participants in his courtroom, a self-evaluation by Judge Patterson, a courtroom observation and a personal interview. Judge Patterson scored high in all areas of the survey, which include overall case management, knowledge of the law, communications, demeanor and diligence. He scored very high among attorney and non-attorney evaluations. Of the attorneys, 86% recommended a strong retain, while 5% recommended a do not retain. Ninety percent of the non-attorneys recommended a strongly retain, 3% recommended a do not retain.
