Based on the information available, the Commission on Judicial Performance recommends Judge Roy G. Olson BE RETAINED.
Judge Roy Olson was appointed to the county court in April 1990. Previously he counseled at Forest Heights Lodge, practiced law on his own and with several firms. He participates in the Colorado County Judges Association, Mentor Program of the State Judicial Department, its Docket Management Committee, District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Task Force, and State Commission on Judicial Discipline. Judge Olson is a board member of past president Forest Heights Lodge, a residential treatment center in Evergreen, and of the Community Responsibility Center, a half-way house. He speaks often to community groups such as Drive Smart, Evergreen Junior and Senior High Schools, and Leadership Lakewood.
Judge Olson presides over civil cases under $10,000, some criminal cases, and issues restraining orders.
A majority of responses from groups surveyed recommend Judge Olson be retained. Judge Olson received praise from attorneys, jurors and litigants for his sense of justice, fairness, knowledge of the law, clear communication, demeanor, prompt hearing and rulings. Judge Olson was scored lower by law enforcement personnel in the areas of fairness, justice and instilling public confidence. Judge Olson is concerned about the lower ratings from this group and is working to improve his performance.
