The Seventeenth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends by a vote of 9-0 that JUDGE F. MICHAEL GOODBEE BE RETAINED.
Judge F. Michael Goodbee was appointed as a District Court Judge for the 17th Judicial District on July 17, 2008. Prior to this appointment, Judge Goodbee was the Assistant District Attorney for Adams and Broomfield Counties 2005-2008. He supervised the Criminal Justice Section as Deputy Attorney General at the Office of the Attorney General (2003-2005). Judge Goodbee was twice elected to serve as the elected District Attorney, 5th Judicial District (1997-2003); also served as the Deputy and Chief Deputy District Attorney in the same district from 1991-1996. He was in private practice from1989-1991 and again from 1996-1997. Judge Goodbee received his B.A. from Colorado State University in 1985 and his Juris Doctorate from Tulane University in 1989. Judge Goodbee has been committed to victim advocacy through many service organizations. He currently serves as the judicial officer on the Crime Victim Services Advisory Board. A statewide committee that reviews alleged violations of crime victim’s Bill of Rights. Judge Goodbee serves as Chair of the Crime Victim’s Rights Subcommittee, and Board member for the Colorado Organization for Victim’s Assistance (COVA) and is a Past-President of the Board; a member of the State Trial Judges Council and several other judicial organizations. Judge Goodbee also serves as guest lecturer in several venues and served as New Judge Mentor at the National Judicial College.
During this term, Judge Goodbee has been assigned to the following divisions: Civil Division, January 2015 to the present, Domestic Relations, July 2014-January, 2015, Juvenile Division, July, 2012-July 2014, and Criminal Division, July, 2010-July, 2012. The Judicial Performance Commission reviewed written decisions/opinions authored by Judge Goodbee, reviewed survey responses from attorneys and non-attorneys, comments from litigants and parties regarding strengths and weaknesses; additionally, a review of his self-evaluation, courtroom observations, and a personal interview with Judge Goodbee. The surveys indicate he is a knowledgeable and efficient jurist; and comments indicate he has excellent case management, is very courteous, objective and reasonable. Very minimal comments were given to reflect his weaknesses, the majority indicating “none”. Questionnaires received by the Commission rate Judge Goodbee very high overall and way above average in courtroom management, application of the law, demeanor and fairness. Survey results from non-attorneys indicated 90% to retain, 10% not retain. Survey results from attorneys recommended an impressive 100% to retain.
Judge Goodbee believes that litigants deserve good faith efforts, due diligence, fairness, clarity, and courtesy from the court and his staff. Judge Goodbee manages his role with integrity and focuses on what is best for the parties involved. He guides his decision making from the bench by the philosophy of “Humility, Wisdom, Compassion – Patience, Patience, Patience”. These words are his guiding principles. The above considerations and overall survey population including judges, attorneys and non-attorneys indicate that Judge Goodbee should definitely be RETAINED for the 17th Judicial District, Adams and Broomfield Counties. It is the Commission’s unanimous recommendation to RETAIN Judge F. Michael Goodbee.
