The 10th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Steven Bruce Fieldman BE RETAINED

Judge Steven Fieldman was appointed to the County Court bench in November, 2007, after a lengthy career in the Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office.  Judge Fieldman received his undergraduate degree from Clark University in 1988.  Judge Fieldman received his law degree from the University of Denver College Of Law in 1992.

The commission considered results from the Judicial Performance Survey, interviews with representatives from the District Attorney and Public Defender’s offices, as well as extensive courtroom observations, written opinions, and his individual interview with the commission.  Of attorneys responding to the survey, 84% recommended to retain, 5% recommended not to retain, and 11% made no recommendation.  Of non-attorneys responding to the survey, 91% recommended to retain, 3% recommended to not retain, and 6% made no recommendation.

Judge Fieldman has a criminal court docket and is the Chief County Court Judge. He is commended for his expertise on the law and for his ability to listen well to those in his courtroom.  Judge Fieldman makes himself extremely accessible to attorneys, he has an extensive history of mentoring attorneys that appear in his courtroom, and he is a self-reflective judge who aims for the highest level of performance.  There were concerns raised regarding Judge Fieldman interjecting himself into plea negotiations, losing his patience and unnecessarily scheduling trials for those individuals facing more serious charges in District Court.  Judge Fieldman is aware of these perceptions and will pay attention to these criticisms to make certain cases continue to be handled appropriately. He is efficient in the day-to-day management of his courtroom, is fair and consistent in his rulings, and treats all counsel and litigants with equal dignity and respect. Judge Fieldman is also very active in serving on boards of community organizations.
